EMG.Ruhr - Energy management on commercial sites

Using energy more efficiently: The EMG.Ruhr project aims to help reduce the ecological footprint in industrial and commercial areas. To this end, energy consumption is to be minimized and climate-friendly solutions developed.

Due to the energy consumption of their companies, industrial and commercial areas represent a key lever for tackling the climate crisis. The aim is both to optimize the energy supply and to reduce the energy consumption of companies. To date, however, there is no comprehensive, systematized information on energy supply in the industrial and commercial areas of the Ruhr metropolis. EMG.Ruhr will create this basis for the first time. In the next step, optimization concepts for the energy supply will be developed as models for selected typical area situations.  Suggestions for saving energy will be made for typical building structures.

Project goals

  • First structured survey of the energy supply of all commercial and industrial areas in the Ruhr Metropolis
  • Demonstration of the connections between economic use, economic significance and energy supply of commercial areas
  • Identification of suitable commercial areas for the development of model approaches to the use of climate-friendly energy sources and energy-saving optimization
  • Identification of suitable development areas with fundamental design opportunities for energy supply without fossil fuels
  • Identification of suitable development areas, in particular for the coupling of the electricity, heat, process energy and mobility sectors as part of urban land-use planning
  • Creation of knowledge about existing GE/GI areas with regard to underused areas, significant vacancies and business expansion areas that are suitable for the exemplary implementation of energy optimization measures
  • Demonstration of typical buildings, transfer of knowledge about building construction, choice of materials or own energy supply in order to significantly reduce the energy consumption of commercial buildings in principle
  • Contribution to supporting companies in optimizing the energy efficiency of their building stock

Project duration

The project EMG.Ruhr - Energy Management on Industrial Sites in the Ruhr Metropolis is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Just Transition Fund (JTF) in North Rhine-Westphalia 2021-2027. The project was launched in July 2024 and will run until June 30, 2027.
