Bottrop/Essen Freiheit Emscher

Freiheit Emscher is currently one of the largest urban development projects in NRW. On a total project area of around 1,700 hectares in the north of Essen and south of Bottrop, a new, forward-looking urban space will be created over the next few years from a typical ‘in-between town’ in the Ruhr region.

The Freiheit Emscher area qualifies as a central development pole thanks to a remarkable unique selling point: here, five former mining sites with a total of around 150 hectares of development area form one of the last large land reserves in the Ruhr region and offer space for innovation and new qualities in urban development.

The vision goes far beyond the revitalisation of these former industrial wastelands. Freedom Emscher means urban transformation in all its diversity. The thematic agenda includes climate resilience, green energy, sustainable mobility,
future technologies, digitalisation and biodiversity. The first mining site to be developed, Emil Emscher, will provide a new location for large-scale, knowledge-based companies and innovative production on around 18.6 hectares.
Marketing is scheduled to start in the second half of 2024.
