Herne/Bochum Food distribution center “HERBO 43”

Lidl optimizes local supply in the Ruhr region: The construction of the new sustainable food distribution center “HerBo 43” in Herne and Bochum will expand supply security for the region.

The industrial wasteland of the existing site was demolished and recycled materials of up to 50,000 cubic meters were recovered from the existing building materials of the industrial wasteland as well as from the existing warehouse for reuse. The new building sets standards in terms of sustainability: the energy-efficient refrigeration system with heat recovery of the new food distribution center “HerBo 43” is operated exclusively with natural refrigerants, which reduces the ecological CO2 footprint by up to 200 tons per year. The waste heat from the refrigeration system is used to heat the entire warehouse and administrative wing. This means that the site operates without fossil fuels. The photovoltaic system on the roof of the building in the first construction phase has an output of 500 kWp and will produce around 460,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. This corresponds to the annual consumption of around 100 four-person households. In addition, e-charging stations with AC and DC connections will be available for charging e-vehicles.

The existing Lidl regional company in Herne currently employs around 250 people. This number is set to almost double in the medium term following the expansion. The employees work in more than 15 different professional fields in the areas of logistics, sales, merchandise, real estate and human resources.
