GELSENKIRCHEN/HERTEN NEUE ZECHE WESTERHOLT

A new district for working and living, climate-friendly and sustainable, with plenty of renewable energy and innovation as well as good connections - this is the Neue Zeche Westerholt, which will be built piece by piece on the site of the former mine in Gelsenkirchen and Herten over the coming years. The first projects have already been realized.

The Westerholt colliery, which covers almost 39 hectares, is located in the municipal areas of the two towns of Gelsenkirchen and Herten and forms the most important spatial and functional link. A new urban quarter is to be created that can take on future tasks while preserving the evidence of the long mining tradition. The new intermunicipal district is a location with short distances due to its excellent infrastructure, which reduces long commutes, for example, but also due to its small-scale nature, which is unique for an old colliery site. The Neue Zeche Westerholt is characterized by a mix of uses in a historically shaped quarter with the special feature of existing industrial history buildings. A powerful central development axis with a parallel promenade will form the backbone of the project area. This axis is the continuation of the “Avenue of Change”, which already exists in part and connects eight districts in Herten and Gelsenkirchen.

A mixed-use area is being created on Egonstrasse that will harmonize residential and work uses side by side. The former employee parking lot to the north of Egonstrasse is being transformed into a new, garden city residential quarter. In the eastern section of Geschwisterstrasse and in the direct transition to the district center of Westerholt, Bahnhofstrasse, the Herten district is being expanded. The new S-Bahn station makes this an ideal location, as it offers the best transport links. The commercial quarter will take up the majority of the space in future. Flexible plot sizes of 1,000 to 10,000 square meters will be offered for sustainable investments once the site has been prepared and developed. The best prospects for business, services, education and housing.
